Golden hour to dusk with Sophie + Char

This session was shot on a warm early summer afternoon spent exploring a small town, Oneonta, in Upstate NY with Sophie + Char. When Sophie and I connected initially, we had this idea to meet up at a hidden skate park that we both knew about. The plan was to start at golden hour and shoot a cozy—carefree skate themed session, and then end it at this beautiful spot overlooking Oneonta at sunset. However, as we walked around the skate park area we found this deserted train and decided to scope it out. This was such an epic find and totally fit Sophie + Char’s adventurous energy! We ended up heading to a more populated skate park right at sunset, but quickly stopped for an outfit change and found a cohesive colored building to match on the way. After the skate park we tried to catch the last bit of a color coated summer sky at the field overlooking the town, but by the time we arrived (and still needed to hike up) the light was shifting to dusk so we settled on a nearby overgrown tennis court. I think the tennis court with daisies growing throughout it was an even cooler view.

The plan indeed changed a bit and honestly I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I’ve discovered that my favorite way to create art during a session is to keep a loose idea and allow for organic flow. When we spend too much energy on constrictive expectations, we lose ourselves in the process and ultimately the outcome. I really strive to create artful imagery that elicits an emotive energy— like cinema. This session radiates cinematic moments— I will always look back to this session for future inspiration.
